Why did you choose INSA?

Because I thought it was the best school for me at the time.

How is your life at INSA and explain it?

Very good. There are many high-quality events all along the year, and there is a general school spirit.

How is your life at SCAN and explain it?

How is your life at INSA and explain it?

Not so bad. Every year that passes I'm more excited about graduating.

How is your life at SCAN and explain it?

Good. It was too hard for me to go from the system in Amerinsa to the system of Scan (not a language problem, the difficulty in the classes was different).

BANGLADESH

MOHAMMAD IRFAN KHAN : DEPARTMENT TC from Dhaka (2011)

Why did you choose INSA?

The cost is a lot less compared to universities in the UK or US, but so is the quality.

How is your life at INSA and explain it?

Bad. Life was generally good, the people are fine, so is the environment, the hostels (and government help with house rent), etc are fine, no complaints about life at all... However, the academics made life a hell-like experience. Firstly, the premiere cycle was a waste,  as later I took the department Telecom, and the two years of mechanics, mechanical drawing, mechanical workshop, chemistry, thermodynamics, to some extent physics, and also the computer programming in useless programming languages (Pascal)... all these won't come to any help for me in the future. Secondly, there is no choice of courses so you can choose things according to your tastes, passion or goal in life and have to settle for the one size fits all academic curriculum... Thirdly the library opens at 9 am and closes at 7 pm (and closed on weekends), I guess no other university in the world have such irrational, illogical and crazy library hours like that.....generally libraries have opening hours like 7 am-Midnight, if not 24/7. Student life is generally awesome, but academic life was filled with all kinds of miseries......

Disclaimer: This interview was done in 2011, Many things have changed: the programming language changed: we are now taught in python. Also, the library has a new timetable: from 8am to 10pm from monday to saturday and closed on sunday but another library nearby is open on sunday.

How is your life at SCAN and explain it?

Good. Well once you speak French things are fine, but whether you speak English or Hebrew, Bengali or Mandarin, you can never be a good friend of a French guy, until you speak French. However, the SCAN administration does care about foreigners and try that foreigners can integrate with the locals with events like integration weekend and etc...

Sofía PEREZ CALLE from Medellín (2023)

Why did you choose INSA?

It was actually one of the suggested universities of Campus France, for International Students. It is a very friendly and easy process for foreigners to apply. Besides, there are international sections, so it felt very welcoming. INSA provides an intercultural environment, and there aren’t many universities as renowned that have that.

Can you explain your arrival at INSA?

Apart from international students, people come from all around France : no one knows each other, which makes it easier for integration : there are no groups already formed. Then we form some sort of little community together which is very cool.

I liked the fact that we have language classes and “humanités” and not only scientific classes.

The first semester was a little hard because I didn't come from a french curriculum, so sometimes I had to adapt, learn new ways to solve problems, or even “unlearn” things ! I definitely wasn’t prepared for the first math test haha, but I mean, it was the same for everybody.

How is/was your life at SCAN? Explain?

I’ve met great people, and I am still meeting new ones, in p2i classes (projects class in 2nd year), for example. I learned how to keep being determined even after failing too haha. I would definitely recommend the SCAN section.

FRANCE

CLEMENT FONTES from Marseille

Why did you choose INSA?

Life at INSA (parties, community life...).

How is/was your life at INSA? Explain?

Perfect. I really like to live here, I have a lot of friends, I don't work too much (compared to other "class prépa").

How is/was your life at SCAN? Explain?

Perfect. It's very cool to have (almost) all the lessons in English, and the atmosphere is very cool; I love all my classmate!

ANAELLE OUDIN-DUBOIS from Saint-Denis, La Réunion (2018)

When did you first hear about INSA?

my cousin graduated from INSA, so I'd say I first heard about the school a few years ago.

Why did you choose INSA?

Because it enables me to get a good engineering diploma, to study in English, and to leave La Réunion.

How is your life at INSA and explain it?

Good. Well mostly: study, meet, befriend, participate in projects, associations and extra-curricular activities, study, discover unexpected hobbies, experience new things, learn, study, live.

How is your life at SCAN and explain it?

Great! Study with friends, practice English, learn new things, travel, meet people from different cultures, open your mind, live.

Would you recommend the SCAN section? Why?

YES! Definitely! Because it is an amazing opportunity, you can learn new languages (apart from English), meet people with different perspectives, learn the same things differently, and I feel like SCAN section is more intimate than the 'classic' one.

SALOMÉ DO from Strasbourg (2018)

Why did you choose INSA?

I chose INSA because they offered classes in English through the SCAN section which was essential for me since I wanted to continue my studies in English.

How is your life at INSA and explain it?

I love my life at INSA, of course, we all study and work a lot but everyone here also knows how to have a good time and take their minds off of school.

How is your life at SCAN and explain it?

SCAN is the best section in my opinion because all the students are very close: we're a giant family basically!

Would you recommend the SCAN section? Why?

I would highly recommend the SCAN section to anyone who speaks English and wants to maintain their level in the language all while making good friends and having a good time.

ANTOINE POULAIN from Kourou, French Guiana (2015)

Why did you choose INSA?

It's reputation.

How is your life at INSA and explain it?

LUCILE FERON

When did you first hear about INSA?

My dad told me about it. He works with Mr Velex in this exchange program between mechanical engineering students at INSA and Georgia Institute of Technology.

Why did you choose INSA?

Its reputation, and it's a lot cheaper than school in the U.S.

How is your life at INSA and explain it?

It's hard to get used to, but overall it's pretty good. I just wish I could go home more often.

How is your life at SCAN and explain it?

SCAN is great. The teachers are pretty cool and I think I would completely fail were the classes not in English.

HUGO CARPENTIER

When did you first hear about INSA?

I first heard about INSA a long time ago since I know someone who actually was at INSA.

Why did you choose INSA?

I chose INSA because I like the way they mix work and extra activities, the campus is very lively. I  also really didn't want to be always working and I knew that INSA was a good place for this. And of course, because of its a good school (good ranking).

How is your life at INSA and explain it?

My life at INSA: Cool life, in short: work just enough to pass the year while taking the most of the student life.

How is your life at SCAN and explain it?

SCAN is extra cooool! Good atmosphere, people are cool, this is a nice section!

How is/was your life at INSA? Explain.

Perfect.Great open people with whom I spent memorable moments. Besides, the campus is huge and offers a lot of choice concerning the subjects you want to pursue studies.

How is/was your life at SCAN? Explain.

Perfect.SCAN is a mix of a lot of cultures and people that are all sharing at least one characteristic: meet and learn about other people.

AHMED KACHKACH from Mohammedia

Why did you choose INSA?

Reputation.

How is/was your life at INSA? Explain.

Very good. I chose INSA de Lyon because it combined the two things I wanted: a good reputation nationally and worldwide (or at least, in francophone countries) + a direct admission in the school, instead of spending 2 years studying generalities that won't make you smarter by any means. Moreover, life at INSA de Lyon is really cool, as we have a lot of associations and people here are - in general - open-minded and happy to know about cultures and civilizations different than the French ones.

How is/was your life at SCAN? Explain.

Good. I really like the fact that I'm able to follow classes that are fully in English this year (after my first year of fully french classes), it will be useful if I choose to go as an exchange student on my 4th year. Also, SCAN students come from all over the world, so its an opportunity for everyone to open his mind to the rest of the world and learn about other cultures!

PALESTINE

RAMI ABU ODEH from Nablus

Why did you choose INSA?

Studying in Europe in English

How is your life at INSA and explain it?

Not so bad. INSA is great and would be even awesome if there weren't too many courses because we don't have time to take part in all the amazing and interesting associations on campus. However,  I really enjoy my studies in GE as this is what I wanted to do from the start.

How is your life at SCAN and explain it?

Perfect.Great team spirit especially in the first year. Don't forget the SCAN trip in the second semester which is a great opportunity to visit the UK.

ROMANIA

SEBASTIAN from Suceava

Why did you choose INSA?

Because you wanted to come studying in France

How is your life at INSA and explain it?

Very good. It's relatively difficult to keep up with the school, but that doesn't mean you cannot afford taking time off. Around here, being cool means finding a sort of equilibrium between going out every night and working hard all the time. Not everyone succeeds, yet life is wonderful for the ones who do.

How is your life at SCAN and explain it?

Perfect. Life is Scan is awesome, especially in the first year. People are much more open-minded and because there are so many different cultures, you get to form really strong friendships. Everyone is unique, including the teachers.

Good. We could do more "English" things, but then again we don't have time.

SPAIN

LIDIA from Madrid

Why did you choose INSA?

Because you wanted to come studying in France

How is your life at INSA and explain it?

Very good. It's not perfect because perfection doesn't exist but people make it enjoyable. I only miss my family...

How is your life at SCAN and explain it?

Perfect.SCAN is the best option. Small classes, more confidence, closer relationships with the other students and teachers and... no "partiels" but projects in First Year!!!
